At least nine people drowned in Johannus

On Midsummer’s Day, the sad statistics of drowned people were replenished with at least nine people in different regions of the country. On the eve of the holiday, four people drowned – three in Eastern Finland and one in Southwest Finland. In all cases, the police conduct an examination of the cause of death.

The last two days have been busy for the police and rescue services. Of the emergency calls received, about half were for emergency medical services, about 40 percent required police intervention, and the remaining 10 percent were redirected to rescuers and social services. Most of the calls were about falls, drunkenness, vandalism and other violations of social behavior.

There were several serious accidents on the roads, one fatal. On Thursday, two vehicles collided head-on in Kuopio, resulting in one death and two severe injuries.
