Coronavirus goes to Finland from Russia – during the European football championship at the border, cases of infection have become more frequent
In Eastern Finland, most cases of coronavirus are now detected at the border with Russia.
Over the past two weeks, significantly more infections have been detected at the Vaalimaa border checkpoint than in other testing points of the Kymenlaakso region.
According to the chief physician of the Kymenlaakso region of social health, Marya-Liisa Mäntyumaa , since last week the passenger traffic from Russia has been about 200-250 people. On Sundays, more than 300 border crossings go out.
Of all travelers recently, about 70% are tested. Samples are taken daily from 150-200 people.
Between 10 and 16 June, 19 positive samples for coronavirus were detected at the Vaalimaa border checkpoint or during post-border testing.
Football fans returning from Russia were tested for the first time on Wednesday night.
– Cases of coronavirus were detected in Vaalimaa yesterday, but according to the questionnaires it is difficult to judge whether the purpose of the trip to Russia was to attend the European Football Championship or other matters, says Mäntyumaa.
According to Mäntyumaa, the final number of infections associated with a trip to the European Championship will be determined when those who come pass the second test 72 hours after crossing the border.
According to the data received, people who tested positive for covid, live outside Kymenlaakso.
A similar trend is also noticeable in South Karelia, where most new cases of coronavirus are detected at the Nujamaa border checkpoint.
