Dialogue enriches both sides

“We see this as a great opportunity to strengthen cooperation with our old partners and find many new ones. That is why the cultural program of the Year of Germany is addressed primarily to the Russian regions. We deliberately go beyond the capital and other large cities in order to cover the widest territory with our various events, “emphasizes Anna Schüller, head of the cultural programs department of the Goethe-Institut in Moscow. This idea is clearly demonstrated, in particular, by festivals in the Pop-Up format, which either have already taken place or are still coming in a number of Russian regions.
The Goethe-Institut provides coordination and promotion of joint projects in the cultural sphere, which are implemented within the framework of the Year of Germany in Russia. From Kaliningrad to Vladivostok, film festivals, concerts and exhibitions will take place, as well as discussions – on real and virtual venues – on topics that play an important role in the public life of our countries. These events are addressed to everyone who is interested in the life of modern Germany. Their main target audience is young people who are looking for answers to all the important questions of our time, whether it be education, digitalization, climate change or sustainable development in general.

It is in the regions that a lot of new partnership initiatives in the field of culture and in the arts have emerged. To make this process even more dynamic, two competitions were held in which German and Russian partners could participate.

The international festival Typomania-2021 in Buryatia “(Ulan-Ude and Baikal), dedicated to graphic design, calligraphy, motion design and book publishing. Within the framework of the competition project, it is planned to create in Buryatia an international discussion platform for specialists from the creative sector of the West and East. In addition, there will be meetings of local students and schoolchildren with leading representatives of the creative industries from different countries, including Germany.
The Goethe-Institut regularly refers to the common cultural and historical heritage of our countries. Cultural exchange between Russia and Germany goes back several centuries and provides many examples of mutual influence in creativity. Some of them, as they say, are heard: these are the Soviet VKHUTEMAS and the German Bauhaus, Kandinsky and the Blue Horseman.

Here is what the head of the cultural programs department of the Goethe-Institut Anna Schüller says about this unique German-Russian co-production: “The starting point of the 15-minute video projection is Goethe and Pushkin, and then an audiovisual kaleidoscope unfolds before the viewer, which is designed to witness the intensive process of creative exchange between cultural figures and cultural movements of both countries: here the Bauhaus and Wassily Kandinsky, El Lissitzky and Kazimir Malevich, Pyotr Tchaikovsky and Vsevolod Meyerhold. This video work seems to me to be a key project of the Year of Germany in Russia, because it demonstrates how cultural workers of the two countries were inspired by creativity each other, as well as how fruitful and multifaceted this process was, which gave us great creations. ” By the way, the German co-author of the project worked with his Russian partners in the virtual space, so to speak, “remotely”. His premiere pthe event will take place on one of the squares in the center of Moscow in the spring of 2021.
The Year of Germany is marked by fruitful cooperation with a number of Russian film and theater festivals, whose experts are well acquainted with current trends and processes in these areas abroad and, in particular, in Germany. As a result, the most interesting German theatrical productions and films are involved in the programs of Russian festivals in 2021. So, at the NET festival, the star of German directing Suzanne Kennedy will introduce Anton Chekhov’s Three Sisters to the Russian audience. This new production was another testament to the continuing interest of German theaters – large and small – in the work of Russian writers, especially Chekhov. Another outstanding event in theatrical life in Russia within the framework of the Year of Germany will undoubtedly be the performance of the ballet troupe Pina Bausch from Wuppertal at the international festival in the Alexandrinsky Theater, which takes place every autumn in St. Petersburg. The troupe will present a production of “Full Moon”.
All events within the cultural program of the Year of Germany in Russia are designed for a wide audience
German electronic music is very popular in other countries, including Russia, especially among young people.
Festivals on this topic gather the audience from different countries, and the communication of musicians is of an emphatically cross-border nature, as a result, international co-productions appear. In recent years, in electronic music, Kazan has been increasingly asserting itself as the musical capital. Therefore, the decision to make electronic music the “highlight” of the ten-day Pop-Up festival in Kazan in November 2020 seemed absolutely logical. The festival in Kazan was invented and implemented by local groups working in the field of contemporary art, in partnership with representatives of the Berlin STM festival. However, they often used hybrid formats. So, German musicians did not perform on the club scene in Tatarstan, as originally planned, but at their home in Germany. In this case, digital technologies have made it possible to overcome all the obstacles and inconveniences caused by the pandemic. Thanks to such formats, it was possible to attract an even larger audience – not only in KazakhstanZani, but also from all over Russia. In 2021, three more Pop-Up festivals will take place – in Krasnodar, Kaliningrad and Vladivostok. Each of them will have their own thematic accent.
The most striking event of the Year of Germany in Moscow promises to be a big holiday in Sokolniki Park, which is scheduled for June 26 and 27. Its main themes will be ecology and sustainable development. The program includes a large concert, film screenings, poetry slams, performances and street theater performances. Guests will be able to participate in various language and educational activities and learn a lot of interesting scientific information about ecology and sustainable development. And, of course, everyone can eat German cuisine and taste drinks from Germany.
All events within the cultural program of the Year of Germany are designed for a wide audience. Along with this, the organizers also bring to the attention of the Russian public chamber, small-format projects filled with meanings important for modern society. In this category, I would like to draw your attention to “Cinemobil” – showing in Moscow and the Russian regions of German films for children and youth. Perhaps the most important thing in this project is the opportunity to organize film screenings in places where there are no own cinemas. Thus, the Year of Germany will allow many Russian children and adolescents for the first time offline to get acquainted with another culture, and after the session ask questions to German directors, actors, cameramen and learn first-hand how cinema is made. Often, such personal meetings with cultural masters remain in the memory of young men and women for a long time and play a decisive role in choosing a profession.
No matter how diverse the cultural program of the Year of Germany in Russia is, all its events are united by a common goal: to promote individual understanding of the ties between Russia and Germany and our common reality through an active exchange of creative ideas and joint artistic creation.
