Merkel expressed confidence that Laschet will become the new Chancellor of Germany

Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Berlin election event on the occasion of the elections to the Bundestag expressed “deep conviction” that she will be replaced by the Prime Minister of the State North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet.
“The CDU / CSU Chancellor candidate Laschet always puts the person at the forefront, always tries to build bridges,” Merkel quotes the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.

Merkel, in her speech, emphasized that as head of government, she kept as far away from party-political issues as possible after resigning from the presidency of the CDU in 2018. Now, however, we are talking about the fight for victory in the elections. During his tenure as chancellor, the euro crisis and energy transition showed how important it is for the CDU / CSU to lead the federal government.

According to experts, with the appearance at a rally in Berlin of Chancellor Merkel, Premier of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet, as well as Premier of Bavaria Markus Seder (CSU), Christian Democrats hope to turn the tide of a difficult election campaign.

In polls, the CDU / CSU (23 percent) have recently lost ground, while the SPD (21 percent) has gained momentum and bypassed the Greens (17), coming into second place. Due to the poor ratings on Lashet, the pressure in the party is growing. Colleagues urge him to “do his best”, ARD TV reports.
