Prison violence often remains unresolved

Many incidents of violence in Finnish prisons have no consequences. This is often due to poor video surveillance systems that do not accurately identify the attacker.

Many inmates are also reluctant to share details and complain about the violence practiced by inmates or other inmates. In this case, even taking DNA samples does not help.

In 2020, 143 cases of inmate violence were recorded in Finnish prisons. Also, 138 cases of threats of violence were recorded.

At the same time, only 82 complaints were filed with the police in connection with physical aggression. Most of the applications came from Riihimäki and Turku prisons.
