STM and THL: Finnish coronavirus statistics deteriorate at the expense of football fans
Last week, the share of imported coronavirus infections was about 50 percent.
According to the THL Health Department, last week (from June 21 to June 27), there were significantly more cases of coronavirus than a week earlier. Their number increased by more than 400 and reached 947 cases.
The increase is largely due to the Finns traveling to the matches of the European Football Championship in St. Petersburg. At least 4,500 people visited Russia, and by June 30, 386 infections were found in those who returned, and another 50 people were infected from them. Most of the cases are in the capital region (264 cases and 17 infections from tourists).
The share of infections brought from abroad last week was about 50 percent, with more than 40 percent related to football tourism in Russia. In the previous week, foreign infections were about a third.
At the same time, according to the Ministry of Social Health, the general epidemiological situation in the country remains calm. Most of the country is at a basic level and only the capital region, Lahti and Kajaani are in the acceleration phase. As of June 30, 38 patients were in hospital for coronavirus infection, 7 of them in the intensive care unit.
