Students often do not have time to relax in the summer, as they have to earn extra money year-round
According to a health study conducted among students in Finnish universities, half of the respondents say that the amount of workload has increased over the past year.
23-year-old Noona Kantomaa has been working on vacation for the eighth consecutive year. This year, for the first time, she found a summer part-time job in her own field.During school hours, she does a part-time job at a grocery store.
– The last time I had a vacation was in 2019. At the end of summer, I took 1 week.During the pandemic, I was on a forced vacation for a short time, it was like a vacation, but I didn’t feel it.I’m not worried about work.I like working. This gives me more opportunities to live comfortably while studying. In the summer, I save money and do what I like on my own weekends, says Noona.
Many students act like Kantomaa, that is, earn extra money while studying. The pandemic, however, has caused students to burn out.According to a study on the health of students in Finnish universities, half of the respondents say that the amount of workload has increased over the past year. That is, some of the students, already suffering from excessive workload, went to summer work. However, for some, part-time work has become a break from distance learning.
– This year, many, on the contrary, want to work.It helps fight loneliness. For many, a part-time job is a way to get to know their own field. This can be a positive experience.I think a lot of people are happy to have found summer jobs, ” says Saara Tenhovuori , Board Member of the Finnish Students’ Union.
Students’ mental health is a concern at Nyyti, a social organization that supports students’ mental health.
– This is individual, but in general, 9 months of study and after that summer work does not give time to rest. The fact remains: many students work part-time all year round, and during their studies they do not have the opportunity to recover.Of course, for many it is very difficult, says Sunny Lehtinen , Chairman of Nyyti Ry
