The number of asylum seekers in Europe fell by a third

In 2020, the number of asylum seekers dropped sharply.

The decline is due to travel restrictions caused by the pandemic, according to the European Asylum Office (EASO).

The number of asylum applications is growing every year, but in 2020 the number of applications dropped to the 2013 level.

485,000 asylum applications were registered in the 27 EU countries, as well as in Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. This is 32% less than a year earlier.

Most of the applications were made in Germany, France and Spain. However, in relation to population, the largest number of applications was in Cyprus, Greece and Malta.

Most of the refugees came from Syria, Afghanistan and Venezuela.
