The only beach in the Madrid region where swimming is allowed this year
Taking a refreshing dip in the natural pools of the Community of Madrid won't be easy this summer. In fact, swimming in rivers, lakes and other freshwater natural pools is prohibited. There is only one exception – Virgen de la Nueva beach on the Pantano de San Juan reservoir. This beach is the only one in the region to have a Blue Flag awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education.
The Pantano de San Juan reservoir, built in 1955, has always been called "Madrid Beach". Its 14-kilometer coastal zone is an oasis for the residents of Madrid on hot summer days. The best area for recreation is Playa Virgen de la Nueva, which is the only beach open this year. It has been home to the Royal Yacht Club of Madrid since 1961, a sailing marina and a camping site, as well as beach bars and boat rentals.
In the municipality of San Martín de Valdeiglesias, where the reservoir is located, you need to go not only for a refreshing swim, but also to visit interesting places, one of which is the ancient bridge and hermitage Ermita de la Virgen de la Nueva, where pilgrims flock during Easter time.
